New Bedford Whaling Museum, New Beford, MA   2008-08-10

 

On the way back from our recent Martha's Vineyard trip, a stop at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in New Bedford, MA.    New Bedford was a major New England seaport and still operates as one to some degree.   Whaling was a major industry from the 18th century to the late 19th century, which some of it continuing in the 20th century.

1/2 scale model of a whaling ship, along with the cauldron's used to render the whale oil right on the ship.

 

 

Scrimshaw was a popular hobby amonst whaling seamen.
